While the comics industry and fandom had concrete evidence that the pop-culture significance of Alan Moore and Watchmen had reached an iconic level. Winnipeg guitarist Joey Serlin named his late-Eighties alternative rock band the Watchmen as a nod to the graphic novel, of which he was a fan. The band went on to be one of Canada’s most commercially successful alternative groups of the late 1990s, sharing rotation time with Pop Will Eat Itself and further cementing Moore’s place in the pop music lexicon.
This addendum justifies a given story not fulfilling every condition Chandler had previously offered, since they do at times have conflicting requirements. In the case of Watchmen, Moore’s inability to make the solution seem inevitable is the result of his desire for a big, surprising revelation that alters the entire scope of the story. The scale of this revelation makes Watchmen better than it would have been otherwise, even at the cost of dramatic inevitability.
