Shape the Top and Bottom Shelves Cutting the long tenons on the ends of the top and bottom shelves, then chopping a mortise in each tenon for the tusk, is probably the most challenging part of the bookcase construction. -long tusked tenons on the top and bottom shelves; also lay out the square mortises that hold the tusks.
If the tabouret base wiggles or rocks, sand away a little material from the bottom of the longer leg or legs until the table is stable. Smack it home. Fit each pair of stretchers together, then slide the legs onto the tenons. Use the heel of your hand to seat the tenons completely. Glue the tenons. Squeeze a small amount of glue onto the wide tenon cheeks and in the mortises. Don’t glue the half-lap joints. Keep things centered. Draw a circle on the underside of the top and use it as a guide to center the base.
Trim the excess off of the two end boards and screw the boards into the rabbets in the top and base. Now, if you unscrew the ship lapped panels, the entire bookcase can be knocked down for storage or shipping. Panel overlap. The back boards overlap as shown. However, you’ll have to cut away one rabbet on the boards at the ends. Final assembly. Slip the top and bottom shelves and the trim pieces in place, and hold everything together with the tusks. Check the case for square by measuring the diagonals, then screw the back panels into place.
