This project also allows you to explore positive and negative space when you carve. Negative space is created by carving away the lines that you’ve drawn. Positive space is created by carving away everything except the lines, which is excellent practice for developing skill with the carving gouges.

Be sure your lines are clean and clear on this copy. All marks will be transferred to the block, so erase any mistakes. Turn the traced copy face down on your work surface and place another piece of tracing paper on top of it. This time, trace only the outlines of the large shapes in the design.
