If the veneer starts to get thicker, the fence may not be angled quite enough. If you open the veneers like pages of a book, you create what is called a bookmatch. Bookmatching yields symmetrical panels that have a balanced feel. Placing each veneer in the same orientation creates what is called a slipmatch. Slipmatches get away from the predictability and balance of a bookmatch. By combining both bookmatches and slipmatches, you can create some pleasing effects. Bookmatching pieces both side to side and end to end makes panels that look contained and elegant.

The dado should be cut in three stages — two shallow cuts flanking a deeper center cut as shown in the Guide Bar Detail. Use a hacksaw to cut the steel pieces to the sizes listed.
