All three, she argues, are unacceptably determinist. Biological science reduces to a matter of physiology, psychoanalysis to a matter of unconscious drives, and Marxism to a matter of economics a subordination which is in fact socially and culturally produced. As such, it is capable of being changed if women can grasp the subjecthood they have been so far denied. De Beauvoir’s conclusion, then, is a mixture of optimism and exhortation. Patriarchal domination is maintained principally, though not exclusively, through ideological control: One is forced to conclude that sexual politics, while connected to economics and other tangibles of social organization, is, like racism, or certain aspects of caste, primarily an ideology, a way of life, with influence over every other psychological and emotional facet of existence.

Partly through personal networking, and partly through the eruption of individual crises and the discovery of individual needs, a series of important legislative and social changes were introduced over the next decades.
